Hiking Journey to the Lodge at Spruce Peak

Booking your stay at The Lodge at Spruce Peak comes with a wide variety of attractions, activities, and landmarks to discover in the area. If you happen to be someone who is looking forward to spending as much time as possible in the great outdoors and you love lacing up your boots and hitting the trails, a journey for hiking in Stowe, VT is just the ticket. This area is packed with beautiful trails to explore and when you’re ready to make the most of the exploration and fun, the following five-day itinerary is the place to start.

Day 1

The very best way to get acquainted with the trails and pathways that make up this area is to book a guided signature hike when you arrive. These can be organized through the Lodge at Spruce Peak and it’s highly recommended that no matter what option you choose, you always pack water, layers, and proper shoes. Your guide will come equipped with sunscreen, bug spray, and a first aid kit to make sure your outing is as safe as possible. There are opportunities to book full moon hikes that have you exploring the Spruce loop and surrounding trails when the sun goes down. These guided hikes are organized around the Strawberry moon, Sturgeon moon, Blue moon, and Harvest moon respectively. Stargazing signature hikes can also be booked during your stay when you want to escape any and all light pollution and hike to a place where you can view a meteor shower, admire galaxies, or spend time staring at stars, planets, and nebulae. Foliage hikes are ideal in the fall when the colors of the season are on full display. A Sterling hike pairs your guided trek with a picnic at Sterling Pond while the Spruce Loop beer strolls and wine walks are a great option when you’re hoping to match your outdoor fun with fantastic flavor too.

Day 2

The second day of your hiking journey takes you up Mount Mansfield. This towering peak is iconic in Vermont and a must-hike if you’re here to explore on foot. Hiking to the top of Vermont’s tallest mountain takes about five hours total and the route is considered best for intermediate trekkers. You’ll follow a route that weaves its way along the ridge offering up spectacular views you’re certainly going to want to capture on camera. Be sure to bring at least two liters of water and light snacks along for the journey and if you’re not entirely comfortable taking this trail on your own, guided outings are the way to go.

Day 3

The third day of your stay is going to focus on exploring the beauty and challenge of Hellbrook Trail. This is typically considered an experienced hikers’ dream come true. It’s by far the most difficult, steep, and direct trail in the area that also leads to the summit of Mt. Mansfield. It’s a more demanding way to savor the view as you trek two miles and conquer an elevation gain of 2,600 feet. If you enjoyed a guided trek yesterday, this is a chance to put what you learned to work and make the experience happen for yourself.

Day 4

Day four is dedicated to chasing waterfront views and you’ll start by trekking your way to Bingham Falls. A half-mile trail leads you through rocky forests to a 40-foot cascade that also hosts deep gorges. This is a great route to enjoy in the summer when the water is refreshing, and the landscape is green and in full bloom. You can pair this route with a trip to Sterling Pond which can be looped to on a path that extends around 3 miles. This will occupy about half of your hiking day and ends with stunning views that are loved for photos, picnics, and lakeside relaxation.

Day 5

The last day of your hiking in Stowe VT to the Spruce Peak Lodge starts with time strolling along the Barnes Camp Boardwalk. While this isn’t a strenuous hike by any means, it’s a great place to stretch your legs, enjoy the view at your own pace, and soak up sights of ponds and swamps along the way. Afterward, consider hiking the Stowe Rec Path, which is open to cyclists as well, and crisscrosses town, giving you easy access to other places you might be in the mood to explore. It’s 5.3 miles total and a direct hiking route to places like Stowe Cider.
