Things to Do During a Stowe Fall Journey

Fall is a fantastic time of year to travel and adventurers who are looking for a particularly scenic and colorful place to explore will love every moment they spend in Stowe, Vermont. From the turning maple trees to the cider houses that are in full swing, this is a beautiful and flavorful season to enjoy in good company. When travel plans bring you this way, the following Stowe fall journey is a wonderful starting point to making sure you make the most of every single moment.

Day 1 – Pack a Picnic and Savor an Incredible Autumn View

Stowe is filled with fantastic places to enjoy a fall picnic during your stay, but one that tops them all is Sunset Rock. This time of year, Sunset Rock offers guests access to gorgeous views out over Stowe’s Main Street from a convenient overlook, and at the summit, you’ll make the most of vistas from 100 feet up. The trail leading to Sunset Rock is easy to access from historic Stowe Village and you’ll only have to conquer a 1.6-mile roundtrip trek to get where you’re going.

Day 2 – Check Out Cold Hollow Cider Mill

Fill your fall getaway to Stowe with a well-deserved flavor when you make time to explore Cold Hollow Cider Mill during your stay. This is a one-stop resource in town for incredible apple cider, apple donuts, and opportunities to sprinkle cinnamon on just about everything! There’s a small restaurant on-site to enjoy and tours of the facility are available upon request as well when you want to learn more about the savory production process.

Day 3 – Take a Horseback Riding Excursion Through the Changing Leaves

Why include traditional leaf peeping on your fall getaway itinerary when you can see it all on horseback instead? Your trip to Stowe deserves to be one-of-a-kind and admiring the foliage during a horseback riding tour booked through Topnotch Stables in town is a must. Trail rides offered here are great for equestrians of all ages and you’ll enjoy plenty of instruction as well as all the gear you’ll need before you head out.

Day 4 – Drive to the Summit of Mt. Mansfield

Those who love to drive their way through a scenic fall stay anywhere won’t want to miss out on taking on the summit of Mt. Mansfield during their visit. While the Overlook and Sunset Rock are popular among hikers, Mt. Mansfield comes with the added benefit of being able to drive to the top in addition to hiking privileges! If you prefer to get behind the wheel and make the most of the amazing views, you’ll need to follow the Auto Toll Road to get to the Summit Ridge of the mountain. From here, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views out and over the Adirondack Mountains with Lake Champlain within view too. Some would say this is the ultimate view in Stowe, but you’ll have to decide for yourself. Do keep in mind that the toll road requires a $29 fee and vehicles cannot carry trailers. RVs, campers, mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, and bicycles are restricted as well. The toll road is open daily from 9:30 am until 4:30 between May 28 and October 17 with the entrance sitting just 4.5 miles from Stowe.

Day 5 – Add Cascade Chasing to Your To-Do List

Fall is a fantastic time of year to check out Stowe’s hidden-away natural wonders in the form of waterfalls. While there definitely options to choose from, Moss Glen Falls is a fan-favorite and has earned the title as one of Vermont’s largest cascades at 85 feet. Watching the water rush over the rocks is particularly appealing when it’s surrounded by a hue of gold, orange, and red in the autumn. Visitors can easily drive to the Moss Glen Falls trailhead and then trek the quarter-mile route to reach their final destination.
