A One-of-a-Kind Destination in the Winter

These days, Stowe has earned the nickname “Ski Capital of the East,” thanks to its endlessly alluring slopes and runs that open up to the public when the fresh powder falls each year. Stowe is truly a one-of-a-kind destination that emphasizes outdoor adventures of all kinds.

While early residents of the area began skiing through Stowe in the winter out of necessity to conquer deep winter snows, by 1921, there were plans in the works to turn a trusted mode of transportation into something thrilling. This was the year the Civic Club planned Washington’s Birthday celebration and aligned it with a Winter Carnival. At the time, about 1,000 people could be counted on each year to head to Stowe and celebrate by ski-jumping, skating, tobogganing, and more.

By the 1930s, big efforts were underway to begin developing Stowe as a true ski town. The Nose Dive trail was cut by Charlie Lord who belonged to the Civilian Conservation Corps group. He would also go on to establish the Bruce Trail which was the first racing trail on the mountain. Lift lines on Mount Mansfield were surveyed by 1940, at which time a Ski Club was also well established. Around the slopes, hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, and more began to pop up. It didn’t take long for the crowds to figure out that Stowe was the place to be each winter. Summer travelers soon followed, realizing that as soon as the snow melted, Stowe became a mecca for warm weather entertainment on hiking and biking trails, out on the water, and in town at the many shops and eateries that were up and coming.

Today, a trip to Stowe is an experience that’s still built on a strong past. This is an area that has a way of calling travelers back time and again with good reason. Elevating that getaway experience even further begins with booking a stay at the Spruce Peak Lodge. This is a fantastic home base in any season to make your Stowe stay comprehensive, comfortable, luxurious, and always close to the area fun you can’t wait to try.
