A One-of-a-Kind Destination in the Winter

These days, Stowe has earned the nickname “Ski Capital of the East,” thanks to its endlessly alluring slopes and runs that open up to the public when the fresh powder falls each year. Stowe is truly a one-of-a-kind destination that emphasizes outdoor adventures of all kinds.

While early residents of the area began skiing through Stowe in the winter out of necessity to conquer deep winter snows, by 1921, there were plans in the works to turn a trusted mode of transportation into something thrilling. This was the year the Civic Club planned Washington’s Birthday celebration and aligned it with a Winter Carnival. At the time, about 1,000 people could be counted on each year to head to Stowe and celebrate by ski-jumping, skating, tobogganing, and more.

By the 1930s, big efforts were underway to begin developing Stowe as a true ski town. The Nose Dive trail was cut by Charlie Lord who belonged to the Civilian Conservation Corps group. He would also go on to establish the Bruce Trail which was the first racing trail on the mountain. Lift lines on Mount Mansfield were surveyed by 1940, at which time a Ski Club was also well established. Around the slopes, hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, and more began to pop up. It didn’t take long for the crowds to figure out that Stowe was the place to be each winter. Summer travelers soon followed, realizing that as soon as the snow melted, Stowe became a mecca for warm weather entertainment on hiking and biking trails, out on the water, and in town at the many shops and eateries that were up and coming.

Today, a trip to Stowe is an experience that’s still built on a strong past. This is an area that has a way of calling travelers back time and again with good reason. Elevating that getaway experience even further begins with booking a stay at the Spruce Peak Lodge. This is a fantastic home base in any season to make your Stowe stay comprehensive, comfortable, luxurious, and always close to the area fun you can’t wait to try. When elevated living with easy access to entertainment is key to your getaway, Spruce Peak Lodge has you covered.

Getting to Stowe and the Spruce Peak Lodge

When you book your stay at Spruce Peak Lodge in Stowe, getting here is easier than you might imagine. If you’re flying in, be sure to make plans to land at the Burlington International Airport. This full-service hub is located in South Burlington, Vermont and is no more than a 40-minute drive from Spruce Peak Lodge. If you’re driving in, Stowe is about 3.5 hours from Boston, 6.5 hours from New York, and 8 hours away from Philadelphia by vehicle. If you need a rental car while you’re here, there are options to book your preferred set of wheels at the Burlington airport as well as in nearby Waterbury or right in Stowe once you arrive. Travelers also have the option of catching the train or bus into Waterbury which is just 15 minutes away from Stowe. You can also consider utilizing Green Mountain Transit in the winter as a shuttle bus service.

The Best Time of Year to Visit

You can’t go wrong when you make time to enjoy a stay at the Spruce Peak Lodge. Stowe is a fantastic place to settle in year-round and Spruce Peak Lodge keeps you close to all of the seasonal activities that adorn your itinerary.

If you had this way between September and November, you’ll enjoy cooler temperatures lingering in the 60s in the daytime and dipping down into the 20s in the evening hours. This is a great time of year to pair your Spruce Peak Lodge stay with admiring the surrounding fall foliage or making the most of family-fun time at area apple orchards.

Ski enthusiasts who want to be close to the slopes will love spending time at the Spruce Peak Lodge between December and February. This is when the vast majority of the snowfall arrives, and conditions are ideal for putting your downhill skills and thrills to work. Temperatures range from 0 to mid-30s this time of year so you’re going to want to make sure you’ve packed all of your warmest slopeside apparel.

If it’s a spring getaway that strikes your fancy, a stay at the Spruce Peak Lodge between March and May puts you in the heart of the seasonal fun. This time of year, you can expect fewer crowds, higher chances for rain, and temperatures that average somewhere in the mid-50s in the daytime. Snow can linger in Stowe through April, so a spring ski trip with accommodations booked at Spruce Peak Lodge is certainly a viable option! You’ll want to keep in mind that this is also the ideal season for maple sugaring in the region so if you have a sweet tooth to satisfy, it could be your very best choice.

Summer is a vibrant season in Stowe and the Spruce Peak Lodge comes to life with on-site activities and family-friendly fun as well. Between June and August, there are plenty of festivals to check out in the area and at the lodge and temperatures stick around the high 70s in the midday hours.

Getting to and Around Stowe

Sitting in the shadow of towering Mount Mansfield in the northern Green Mountains, Stowe is the perfect pairing of small-town charm and rugged terrain that outdoor adventurers crave. Getting here is a breeze as Stowe sits just about a 45-minute drive from Burlington. Many visitors fly into Burlington International Airport where they can pick up a rental car and make the drive in at their own preferred pace, soaking up the scenery along the way. If you happen to be making a stop in the capital of Montpelier first, you’ll only be a 30-minute drive from scenic Stowe. While Stowe is a small community that’s extremely walkable if you’re planning to stay downtown and focus many of your activities here too, outdoor adventurers will typically find having a rental car is a good option. Many attractions are located just beyond Stowe’s perimeter and being able to head out to explore whenever you like is a convenient way to customize your stay in Vermont.

The Best Time of Year for Outdoor Fun

It’s fair to say that there is no bad time of year to make plans for an outdoor fun-focused trip to Stowe, Vermont. Mostly, it comes down to what your weather preferences are and what types of outdoor activities you enjoy adding to your itinerary. Summer is a prime time of year for hitting the mountain trails in style, chasing cascades, and cooling off in local swimming holes. Temperatures rise in the summer and there’s plenty of sunshine to go around. You’ll want to take note that summer is definitely one of the busier seasons in Stowe so if you don’t mind a few crowds here and there, you’ll be good to go.

For those who are looking to pair their outdoor adventures with admiring fall foliage, there’s no better time to head this way than the fall. Stowe is often pointed to as a top leaf peeping spot in the country year after year and the maze of trails leading through forested terrain means there’s no shortage of options to choose from when it’s time to trek with a camera in hand.

Spring is wonderful for those looking to make the most of outdoor fun with milder temperatures on their side, while a winter trip this way is a must for explorers who can’t wait to savor every second on the slopes. Stowe gets ample snowfall annually and is a prime place to enjoy everything from skiing and snowboarding to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing between January and March.

Set Your Sights on the Mount Mansfield Summit

A trip to Stowe that’s designed around outdoor adventure won’t feel complete without some time set aside to summit Mount Mansfield. The tallest peak in Stowe and in the state of Vermont is a must-try for anyone with a passion for lacing up their boots and hitting the trails. The good news is that while Mount Mansfield is impressive, it’s also refreshingly accessible.  Beyond hiking your way to the top, you also have options to ride a bike or drive certain routes that lead to impressive overlooks.

The mountain is divided into various sections known as the nose, the upper lip, the chin and the Adam’s apple respectively. The nose sists at 4,062 feet, the chin sits at 4,393 feet, and the Adam’s apple of the mountain enjoys a place at 4,060 feet. It’s entirely possible to drive to the nose on the Auto Toll Road if you depart from Stowe Mountain Resort. It’s a wonderful option between May and late October, covering 4.5 miles of terrain. If you prefer to hike from here, the Long Trail runs for 1.3 miles from the nose to the high point on the chin and offers up spectacular views along the way.

When you find yourself excited to attempt a base to summit excursion on foot, head over to Underhill State Park and trek the 3.3-mile Sunset Ridge Trail which is strenuous but rewards you with gorgeous vistas at every turn. For those who are interested in a guided outing, Spruce Peak Outfitters offers custom guided hikes that you can enjoy to the summit of Mount Mansfield alongside a knowledgeable and friendly guide. This is a great option if you want to maximize your time or you’re wanting to explore but aren’t entirely confident in your skill set quite yet.

Additional Hiking Options to Add to the List

Stowe is known and loved for its many hiking trails and beyond the Mount Mansfield summit, there is a long lineup of pathway options to enjoy. If you’re heading this way with the entire family in tow and you’re looking for a kid-friendly path to try, make Wiessner Woods your first stop. This is a relatively easy trail network with minimal elevation gains included in the area. Integrated into the Stowe Land Trust, Wiessner Woods sees many hikers coming through in the summertime to look for the hidden fairy gardens and gnomes that are sprinkled along the woods and pathways much to the delight of little ones! If you swing by in the wintertime, this is a top destination to enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing alike.

Elmore Mountain is another great hike to consider if you’re willing to travel just 20 minutes outside of Stowe to reach the trailhead. In total, you’ll conquer a 4.5-mile loop with stops at Lake Elmore included. Along this route, the reward for scrambling on the Fire Tower Trail comes in the form of a refreshing dip in the water.

Yet another great choice to add to your itinerary in the name of hiking fun is Stowe Pinnacle. This is a welcoming 2.8-mile trek that’s moderately difficult thanks to a steady climb to the top. Heading out early in the morning on this route is always recommended as you’re going to want to take time to linger and enjoy the views without having to contend with any other groups of hikers.

Make Time for Mountain Biking

As exciting as hiking your way to fun in Stowe can be, sometimes, there’s nothing quite as refreshing or thrilling as exploring on two wheels. Stowe is adorned with top-notch Stowe biking trails that are suitable for cyclists of all skill levels. Over at Cady Hill Forest, you can enjoy access to 11 miles of mountain biking trails that are accessed along Mountain Road on Route 108. Forested trails are wonderful for making time to admire wildlife and lush terrain while more experienced riders might be drawn to the challenging and technical singletrack options available in the area. The Stowe trail network also includes Adamas Camp and Sterling Forest which are great to check out too.

Pair Vermont Adventure with Flavor

There’s absolutely no rule out there that says your outdoor Vermont adventures can’t be paired with fantastically flavorful moments. When you’re looking for the best of both, some quality time on the Stowe Recreation Path is always a good option. Beginning in Stowe Village, this route is 5.3 miles one way as it heads up the mountain to Top Notch Resort. While walking the Stowe Recreation Path is a treat in and of itself, it’s often the easy access to local hot spots along the way that keeps visitors coming back time and again. As you stroll along in the fresh air, there are options to stop off at places like Idletyme Brewing Company and enjoy a delightful beverage in good company. There are places to picnic, enjoy bird watching or make the most of access to the West Branch of the Little River where you can wade or swim. There are many bridges that span the West Branch of the Little River as well which provide a great backdrop for photos. Whether you walk or ride, this multi-use trail is worth exploring for yourself.

Chase Down Some Spectacular Cascades

It’s hard to imagine anything more mesmerizing than coming upon a waterfall while you’re out in nature enjoying grand adventures. When you’re visiting Stowe and hoping to have this experience, you’ll want to make sure to prioritize stops at Moss Glen Falls and Bingham Falls. Both cascades are free to access and require only a short hike to reach. Moss Glen Falls is just a 10-minute drive from town and stands 125 feet high. You’ll find Moss Glen Falls in the C.C. Putnam State Forest on Moss Glen Falls Road. If you head over to Bingham Falls, you’ll want to set out early in the day as this a popular place to swim, take photos, and picnic. The short hike to the upper part of the gorge is less than a mile and the trailhead is situated on the east side of Route 108 just north of Stowe. You’ll find parking options on both sides of the trailhead.

Get Out on the Water

When you’re looking to cool off, getting out on the water in and around Stowe is the way to go. Make your way to the Waterbury Reservoir when you’re in the mood to fish, swim, or paddle your way through a sunny afternoon in Vermont. Waterbury Reservoir is tucked into mountainous surroundings and is always as scenic as it is exciting to explore. The west side of the reservoir hosts Little River State Park where you can book ranger-led hikes or take part in sponsored interpretive programs throughout the year too. Over at Waterbury Center State Park, visitors are invited to launch their boats, rent canoes and kayaks, or paddle north towards the lakeside campsites.

Enjoy Winter Outdoor Adventures of All Kinds

As temperatures begin to drop and snow begins to fall, Stowe transitions into a ski enthusiast’s paradise. Over at Stowe Mountain Resort, downhill adventure seekers can check out incredible trails and lifts or book lessons if you’re excited to learn to ski for the first time in Vermont. Stowe receives over 300 inches of fresh powder annually so there’s no reason not to take advantage of access to the 116 trails and the vertical drop of 2,360 feet that Stowe Mountain Resort hosts. When you want to swap your skis for skates, the rink at the Village at Spruce Peak is open every day in the winter and is prime for working on your balance! Over at Gentle Giants you can book a horse-drawn sleigh ride through Stowe in the winter while the Trapp Family Lodge is a one-stop resource for top-of-the-line cross-country skiing.

Easter Sunrise Service

Wake up early in the morning and spend quality time with your family by attending the sunrise service. Sure, you will have to wake up before dawn, but the magic of the sunrise hitting the mountain peak, curling up under the brisk air with your family, and sitting together with a cup of hot coffee or hot chocolate is a great way to bond with one another and celebrate this holiday.

On Easter morning, you can join the other fellow early risers by going to the top of Mt. Mansfield via the non-stop gondola that runs from the town down below. Hop in the gondola with your family and soar high above the sky as you slowly rise above the pine trees, surrounding hills, and the billowing clouds.

On the last day of the winter operation for the mountain, you can also attend the Easter Sunrise Service by Stowe Community Church between 4:30 am and 5:40 am. One of the best ways to celebrate what you are thankful for is to attend the last day of the winter gondola service and wake up early to get the day started in the best way possible!

Easter Brunch at Solstice Restaurant

After waking up super early for the sunrise service, it might be time to go home for a nap. Once you are feeling rested and ready to tackle the day, Easter Brunch and an Easter egg hunt await! Head to Spruce Peak in Stowe for their Easter Brunch and egg hunt on Easter Sunday to have fun with your kids, taste some mouthwatering food, and imbibe a few mimosas or glasses of sparkling wine.

First, head to Spruce Peak Village Greens with your kids and their Easter baskets to try to gather as many eggs as possible. Trust us, your kids will absolutely love running around the park area, finding eggs, plopping them into their basket, and opening them later in the day for a special treat.

After some time of running around and working up an appetite, head to the Easter Brunch to fill your plate. We recommend tackling the standard items first, like scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and sweet pancakes, and then moving on to the more upscale items, like the savory ham carving station and the choose-your-own Benedict buffet. Pair any one of these dishes with a Bloody Mary and mimosa for a complete brunch experience.

Check Out 10 Railroad Street

Do you want to go to a family-owned, no-frills, laid-back diner for your Easter brunch? We Don’t blame you. Sometimes, the hype around Easter can be a bit too much, and the fancy plates are just too fancy. Suppose you want something casual and relaxing for you and your kids to enjoy. In that case, 10 Railroad Street in Morrisville is just a short drive away from your lovely abode in Stowe, VT.

This laid-back restaurant offers traditional American food, tasty pints of beer, and an authentic vibe that is hard to come by. This old, 19th century train station has been converted into a wooden and dark-paneled American restaurant that includes tasty breakfast plates, hefty brunch dishes, towering lunch sandwiches, and much more.

Head here for brunch to curb any pub food cravings you might have. Suppose you come later in the day, like for a late lunch. In that case, we love the huge sandwiches, like the Nashville chicken sandwich with buttermilk-brined fried chicken, the Marinated portobello burger with smoked Gouda cheese, or the famous Reuben with house-made corned beef.

They also offer pub classics, like fish n’ chips and shepherd’s pie, which are perfect to have with a pint. Bring out your inner old English or Irish side for the Easter holiday with a visit here.

Go Skiing

Of course, the first thing that you need to include on your schedule is to go skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing with your friends. There are tons of trails for you to choose from that range from easy blue beginner trails to hard, black diamond runs that whizz you down the mountain. Spring offers long days of prime skiing and snowboarding weather with fewer people, so you can cruise at your own speed.

You can use your season pass, or buy a weekend pass, to use at the Stowe Mountain Resort all the way through mid-April, so you never have to worry about getting to the mountain too late in the year. Not sure where to start? Check out the website to see the mountain formation to find out what lifts are open and the best trails for your skill level.

There are more than 12 lifts, 116 trails, and one terrain park at this resort, so there is truly something for everyone. If you are an intermediate skier, you’re in luck with more than half of the trails geared towards your skill set. Start with one of the green trails, like Crossover, Dalton, Lower Tyro, or Jake’s Ride.

Once you are feeling more comfortable, take the gondola up Hackett’s Highway to try your luck at Lower Lord, Christiana, Upper T-Line, and tons of other blue trails that wind you through the pristine pine forest and open slopes. No matter which path you choose, you will have incredible views the whole way down.

Grab a Drink for Après Ski

After you spend the entire day shredding fresh powder on the slopes, it is time for a drink (or a few). Luckily for you, there are tons of good bars, breweries, distilleries, and wineries right in the heart of Stowe and the surrounding mountain towns. We recommend going to Rimrocks Mountain Tavern, the Matterhorn, and Doc Pond’s for your first time in Stowe, VT.

Rimrock is a classic pub that is right on the main street, offering great appetizers, large pores of craft beer, and a game room that is great for challenging one another to a friendly game of pool or foosball as you wait for your food. This bar also has outdoor seating and live music some days of the week, so you can head here to chat with locals, liven up the evening, and have a few drinks with your pals.

The Matterhorn is great for mountain lovers who want to feel like they are indulging in après skiing after going on a long ski or snowboard day through the Swiss mountainside. This popular spot is a dimly lit wooden bar that is ideal for post-slope eats, hangs, and brews. Head here any night of the week to go dancing with your friends, play pool, and sip on some craft beer. We recommend ordering one of the hearty appetizers, sitting by the fireplace, and letting your ski boots dry on the wooden floor.

Then, share in a botanical crush scrub with mineral-rich salts and aromatherapy oils with your partner to relax and decompress after a long travel day.

Head Outside

After a day full of relaxation and rejuvenation, you can then head outside to enjoy the snow, pump up some adrenaline, and make memories with your loved one. We think that doing the fondue snowshoe tour is a great way to get some exercise and indulge at the same time. This tour offers an intimate dining experience with your loved one, including a three-course meal and fondue dipping experience at the upscale Fritz Bar.

For those who want to enjoy another once-in-a-lifetime experience that won’t break the bank but will get you and your partner in a romantic mood, we recommend doing the evening sled dog tour. Not only does this provide you with an up close and personal look at the scenery in beautiful Vermont, but you can meet the friendly dogs, learn about the history of the sport, and see the highlights of Stowe, VT.

Grab a Coffee in the Morning

There is no better way to wake up in the morning than to head to Stowe Bee Bakery and Cafe to get baked goods, enjoy a sweet treat, and enjoy a hot cup of coffee to help you warm up, stay energized, and taste some of the best espresso in the entire town.

Dinner Date

Not sure where to take your significant other for a romantic evening out on the town? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. There are dozens of restaurants in Stowe that can match your needs, whether you want a low-priced option or a fine dining establishment offering some of the best seafood and meat entrees in the entire state.

We recommend making a booking at The Bench to enjoy a laid-back atmosphere, feel like you are eating in a high-end mountain cabin, and watch a sports game on the TV. If you would rather have a fine dining meal in a candlelit venue, there is nowhere better than Harrison’s Restaurant.

Order the oysters on the half shell with mignonette and lemon to share with your partner. We also love splitting the Cajun crawfish and crab cakes with Creole aioli and lemon with mixed greens for a healthy starter.

As a main dish, the Ribeye Steak au Poivre, featuring a grilled 12-oz ribeye with three peppercorn brandy cream sauce and roasted fingerling potatoes, is one of the best dishes in the entire town. If you would rather stay with seafood, we absolutely love the Grilled Rainbow Trout with lemon tarragon compound butter and jasmine rice.

Wine Tasting

Nothing really gets you in the romantic spirit more so than red wine and chocolate, right? We think so, too. Head to Dedalus Wine to pick up some mouthwatering desserts, enjoy a few glasses of red wine, and chat over a bottle of red with your partner. We also love going to Cork Wine Bar to enjoy wine tasting and see what snacks pair perfectly with hefty pours of red and white wine.

Locals and tourists alike also love going on a half-day trip to the Ellison Estate Vineyard. This beautiful location offers wine and cake pairings that are ideal for a romantic weekend, including chocolate cake, full-bodied red wine glasses, and other offerings that will fulfill your sweet tooth.
